Jojo Mehta

Co-founder and Executive Director of Stop Ecocide International, Jojo Mehta is one of the leading figures in the global movement to recognize ecocide as an international crime. A graduate of Oxford and London universities, she has coordinated since 2020 the panel of legal experts that developed the first independent definition of ecocide, now being advanced in some of the world’s highest international institutions.

As Chair of the Stop Ecocide Foundation, she works tirelessly to ensure that the mass destruction of ecosystems is treated with the same gravity as crimes against humanity and war crimes. Her commitment to environmental justice has led her to speak at numerous multilateral forums — including United Nations conferences — and to help shape a new legal language in defense of the planet.

A global ambassador for the Amazonia, the Heart of Mother Earth project, she champions an approach deeply aligned with Indigenous peoples and their role as guardians of life. She also appears in the film of the same name, to which her organization is an official partner.
