Chief Ninawa Huni Kui
As president of the FEPHAC (Federation of the Huni Kui People), Chief Ninawa speaks on behalf of his people, who are spread across 104 villages in 12 Indigenous territories. A tireless advocate for Indigenous rights, he travels the world to raise awareness about the threats facing their lands and to promote rooted alternatives such as agroforestry.
Opposed to the financialization of nature, he is one of the few Indigenous leaders to publicly denounce carbon offset projects and their dangers in major international forums. An active member of the Alliance of Guardians of Mother Nature, he was appointed lead editor for Brazil by nearly 150 Indigenous representatives during the 2017 Grand Assembly in Brasília, to help co-draft the Alliance’s founding Declaration.
